Un set de Cornhole est de plus en plus présent chez nous
Cet été, j'ai vu beaucoup de gens, jeunes et vieux, jouer au jeu de lancer de sacs, appelé "Bean Bag Toss" ou "Baggo", dans les parcs, les jardins, les clubs sportifs et lors de fêtes ! Le Cornhole était l'un des rares jeux considérés comme sûrs en période de coronavirus. Le Cornhole gagne rapidement en popularité aux Pays-Bas et dans d'autres parties de l'Europe, et après une partie intense et compétitive, la même question est souvent posée : "D'où vient le Cornhole ?" En tant que pionniers du Cornhole aux Pays-Bas, nous avons décidé d'enquêter !
Les racines du Cornhole
Pour retracer les origines du Cornhole, nous devons faire un saut outre-mer vers les États-Unis. Si une ville est totalement folle de Cornhole, c'est bien Cincinnati, située dans l'État de l'Ohio. Il n'est donc pas surprenant que cette ville prétende être le berceau du Cornhole. La ville affirme être la première où les habitants remplissaient des sacs de grains de maïs et les lançaient dans des trous.
Cincinnati rencontre de la concurrence dans le Midwest américain. Le Cornhole est extrêmement populaire dans l'État du Kentucky. Faisant désormais partie de la culture du Midwest, l'histoire raconte que le pionnier Jebediah McGillicuddy aurait joué la première version de "Baggo" dans les montagnes caractéristiques du Kentucky, avant que le jeu ne se répande.
Évidemment, les pionniers de Cincinnati et du Kentucky n'étaient pas les premiers habitants des paysages américains. La légende raconte l'histoire des Amérindiens ingénieux qui vivaient dans l'Illinois. Ils fabriquaient des sacs avec des vessies séchées (oui, des vessies), les remplissaient de grains de maïs et jouaient avec de manière compétitive. Influence allemande sur le Cornhole
Une explication alternative nous rapproche beaucoup plus de chez nous, à savoir nos voisins allemands ! L'Amérique est caractérisée par d'immenses paysages agricoles, et ces agriculteurs sont traditionnellement souvent originaires d'Allemagne. La légende raconte que le pionnier allemand Matthias Kuepermann aurait vu des enfants jeter des pierres dans des trous creusés dans le sol. Cela lui aurait donné l'idée de concevoir des sacs et des planches en bois pour des raisons de sécurité. Le jeu serait ensuite devenu très populaire à Cincinnati. Deux points supplémentaires pour les pionniers de Cincinnati.
Cependant, il existe également des preuves tangibles des premières racines du Cornhole aux États-Unis. En 1883, Heyliger de Windt a déposé un brevet pour le "Parlor Quoits". Dans ce jeu, il y avait un trou carré au lieu d'un trou rond dans la planche. Ce jeu fut le premier jeu enregistré où des sacs remplis de grains de maïs étaient lancés vers une planche en bois avec un trou.
